Olympique de Marseille missed the chance to go top in Ligue 1 after succumbing to a 2-1 defeat at Classique rivals Paris Saint-Germain FC, leaders Stade Brestois 29 having earlier lost 3-1 at LOSC Lille Métropole.
Victory would have lifted champions Marseille ahead of Brest on goal difference, but they now find themselves fourth – behind PSG – after their fierce rivals from the capital made a strong start. Mevlüt Erdinç registered with nine minutes gone when Steve Mandanda could only parry a Clément Chantôme shot, and Guillaume Hoarau then scored ten minutes later as he latched onto a Nenê ball behind OM's defence. The visitors quickly responded through Lucho González but were unable to draw level.
Brest tasted defeat for the first time in nine league games as they came out second best in northern France. Moussa Sow plundered his sixth strike this term and Gervinho and Eden Hazard also found the net as Lille climbed to fifth. Their local rivals RC Lens had a win to cheer as well, beating Montpellier Hérault SC 2-0, though they remain second-bottom. One spot higher than Lens, AS Monaco FC ran out 4-0 winners at fellow strugglers AS Nancy-Lorraine, while Toulouse FC dropped to seventh due to a 2-0 reverse at OGC Nice.
