In the French Cup, AS Monaco FC were made to struggle by lower league amateur side US Montagnarde before earning a place in the quarter-finals. Alex Nyarko scored the only goal of a 1-0 win after 26 minutes but the minnows kept the pressure on the top-flight side.

Deschamps: 'Always tough'
Monaco coach Didier Deschamps said: "We failed to build on the first goal but we knew what we were in for. This is the French Cup and it's always tough for the elite clubs. We came here to qualify and that's what we did."

Libourne survive
In the day’s other French Cup games, fourth division FC Libourne Saint-Seurin – conquerors of FC Metz in the previous round – booked their place in the last eight with a 2-0 victory over LB Châteauroux. Elsewhere, SC Bastia and Nîmes Olympique both strolled into the quarter-finals with 2-0 victories over second division sides AS Nancy-Lorraine and Amiens SC respectively.

Strasbourg scrape through
The remaining ties both went beyond the 90 minutes. RC Strasbourg needed extra-time to beat US Lusitanos by the odd goal in three and CS Sedan-Ardennes held their nerve to defeat third division Stade de Reims Champagne 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in Troyes.
