Paris Saint-Germain FC missed the chance to all but wrap up the Ligue 1 championship as they were held to a 1-1 home draw with Valenciennes FC, having lost Thiago Silva to a 43rd-minute red card.
Victory would have lifted Carlo Ancelotti's side nine points clear of nearest rivals Olympique de Marseille with three games remaining – and with a hugely superior goal difference.
The capital club will have to wait at least another week before ending the suspense, however, as they fell behind with 17 minutes gone when Gaël Danic pounced on the rebound after a Vincent Aboubakar shot was parried. The situation worsened for PSG when they lost Thiago close to the interval, but they at least avoided defeat when Alex headed in from an Ezequiel Lavezzi corner late on.
Also on Sunday, Olympique Lyonnais maintained their hold on third spot and France's final UEFA Champions League berth by triumphing 3-0 at AS Nancy-Lorraine. Bafétimbi Gomis struck twice, either side of a Yoann Gourcuff effort, as Lyon kept themselves three points clear of OGC Nice, who were spurred on by a Dario Cvitanich double in a 3-0 win at Stade Rennais FC. Both teams ended the match with ten men.
