FH Hafnarfjördur defeated Fjölnir 2-1 at home on Saturday to seal a seventh Icelandic championship title with one round of games still to play.
The victory maintains the five-point gap to nearest challengers Breidablik – 1-0 victors against ÍBV – with the difference now insurmountable. For FH coach Heimir Gudjónsson, his team's triumph was all about stability. "We began the season well, but after two defeats in the middle of the season we saw that we needed to focus on the football and did so," he said.
"Maybe we complicated things on and off pitch. Football is a rather simple game and we began to enjoy it. The only thing I regret is that we did not get chance to meet Athletic Club [in the UEFA Europa League third qualifying round, after being knocked out by İnter Bakı] so we could show where FH stands against a good team. Of course we want to do well in the European games."
FH's success comes after a two-year spell without lifting the trophy and means a return to UEFA Champions League qualifying. Breidablik are assured of second spot while relegation issues are already decided, with Keflavík and Leiknir set to play next season in the second tier.
