Adam Matuszczyk

Adam Matuszczyk has chosen to play international football for Poland, the land of his birth, although he also qualifies for Germany, the country in which he grew up. Groomed by 1. FC Köln, the midfielder left the Bundesliga club in January 2012 for a loan spell at second-tier promotion challengers Fortuna Düsseldorf.

• Born in the Silesian town of Gliwice, he moved to Germany at an early age and settled in the Saarland.

• Became affiliated to Köln at 14 and worked his way up through various youth levels and the club's amateur ranks to the first team, making his Bundesliga debut on 27 February 2010 against local rivals Bayer 04 Leverkusen.

• It took him only five matches before he registered his first Bundesliga goals – a double in a 2-0 win at TSG 1899 Hoffenheim on 10 April 2010; the following month he was handed his first senior cap for Poland – in a 0-0 home draw with Finland in Kielce.

• Made 24 appearances, scoring two goals, as Köln finished tenth in the 2010/11 Bundesliga, but was less favoured by new boss Ståle Solbakken in 2011/12 and moved to Düsseldorf on a half-season loan.

• Scored his first international goal on 9 October 2010 as Poland held the United States 2-2 in a friendly at Chicago's Soldier Field; appeared mostly as a substitute in the UEFA EURO 2012 warm-up games during 2011.
