Hermann Stadler

Coach Hermann Stadler
21/05/61
"Goalscoring was our main problem. We created eight or nine clear chances against France and Greece and couldn't convert any of them. Then, against Ukraine, we just couldn't latch on to our first two performances. We were prone to errors and they were far superior. We could count ourselves lucky to be in the game right to the end. Ukraine played exactly as we would have wished to do and, given the way we played, we didn't deserve to go through."

Austria team analysis

• 1-4-2-3-1 or 1-4-3-3 with one (v Greece) or two screening midfielders
• Emphasis on combination play, building through midfield
• Alternative use of direct supply to target striker Kvasina
• Disciplined, resolute defending with pressing as from midfield
• Good use of diagonals to wingers, full-backs or striker drifting wide
• Horvath the skilful playmaker linking midfield with attack
• Strong collective virtues, technique, aerial power, well-drilled set plays
