Wales beat Hungary to pull clear at summit

Hungary 0-1 Wales
Brian Flynn's side will be sure of a play-off place if they avoid defeat in Italy on Tuesday after Robson Kanu's goal gave them victory in Hungary.

Wales moved three points clear at the top of Group 3 of UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualifying with a 1-0 victory against Hungary.

Italy's 1-0 win against Bosnia and Herzegovina on Friday night drew the Azzurrini level on points with Brian Flynn's side ahead of the two teams' meeting in Pescara on Tuesday. Wales, though, now know that they must only avoid defeat in that game to book a play-off place thanks to Robson Kanu's winner in Szekesfehervar.

The winning goal arrived on 68 minutes, substitute Ashley Richards providing the assist with a delightfully flighted free-kick from the right. Kanu stole in unnoticed by the Hungarian defence, heading past Péter Gulácsi and high into the roof of the net. Hungary captain András Debreceni was dismissed for felling Kanu inside the penalty area with four minutes remaining but the match-winner failed to add a second from the spot.

"Hungary made a blistering start; we were fortunate to be level at half-time," Flynn told UEFA.com. "Hungary were the better side for 45 minutes. Every team needs a bit of luck and we certainly got it in the first half."
